Has anyone else developed a slightly unhealthy obsession with Marie Kondo? No? Just us then…
Marie Kondo is a professional tidier. Her methods for decluttering have recently taken the world by storm.
Inspired by her best-selling book ‘The life-changing magic of de-cluttering’ she now has her very own show on Netflix. She’s helping individuals rid their lives of clutter. But it’s more than that. These people’s lives seem to actually improve in so many other ways as a result of having a good sort out. We’re hooked.
Kondo’s top tips for a decluttered life
Kondo has developed a method of tidying you home. It is called the KonMari method. It encourages you to tidy one category at a time, rather than the more typical tidying method of tackling one room at a time. Start off with your clothes, then move onto books, papers, miscellaneous items and finally sentimental items.
In the KonMari technique, there are six basic rules to tidying:
- Commit yourself to tidying up.
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle.
- Finish discarding first.
- Tidy by category, not by location.
- Follow the right order.
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy. If it does, keep it. If it doesn’t, get rid of it! Just remember to thank it (whatever it is) for its service first…
